Freelance Illustration

Here's a quick freelance illustration I finished today. The art director asked me to do it in the graphite/digital style I've been putzing around with lately, so it was fun to see it in action. I'll probably keep pushing this new process and see where it goes. Anyway, this is NY state assemblyman Brian Kolb as Sisyphus.

Tony Recall!?

When questioned by a House subcommittee, BP CEO Tony Hayward wasn't quite as accountable as one might think after 28 years of working with the company. Just trying to avoid the growing fray of finger pointing? C'mon Tony, who are you kidding.

This was a self portrait sketch I did from a picture my girlfriend took of me a couple days ago. I liked the expression, but once I drew it, I think I came out looking like a skinny John C. Reilly.

Marc the wood worker strikes again!

About a month ago Melissa was getting ready for her senior show. She was a graphic design major, and had to display her project in the student gallery along with the rest of the soon-to-be graduates. Well, she asked me to help her build a stand to display all her work (she was designing products for a fictitious coffee shop: Milieu.) Go check out her site!



Here's us in front of her stuff and the stand. Anyway, after she was done with the giant hunk of wood, she gave it to me so that I may use it for a minibar in my apartment. I thought it would be a pretty sweet addition to the kitchen/living room area, especially since my roommate is moving out and taking our kitchen table.




Every bar needs a good name and sign, so I made one up the other day. I soon realized, however, that I am terrible at typography. I probably could have figured it out all the spacing and a better font, but the whole thing ended up being way more labor intensive than I had planned.



I also did a little addition to my studio space. I've had a sheet of peg board for a while now, and finally put it back up. But when I did that, it looked a little cluttered on my desk, so I built a shelf out of some scrap wood I had lying around. Needless to say, my apartment smells of sawdust, wood stain and varnish. It's great!

I find it funny how Congressional productivity is directly related to the timeliness of hot issues and elections.

Chewless Campus!!??

Well, there have been a few things during my tenure at UW-Stout that have gotten me a little steamed, but most recently it has been the campus wide ban on all tobacco use. Last year there was a referendum for a smoking ban (socially enforced as it was unlawful to ban tobacco use on government property), but now the Stout Student Association and the student body have expanded upon the referendum to include all types of tobacco. I still am wondering in what way a person chewing, snuffing, snusing, etc. has anything to do with other students on campus. Other than the appearance being unpleasant for onlookers, there is no harm to anyone, save the users. In the case it is for the sake of tobacco users that the administration and SSA banned tobacco use on campus, there are many other health conscious issues that should be addressed before the minimal percentage of chewers and smokers on campus. How about the nutritionally unsatisfying food they serve at our dining halls that many of the students indulge in. Freshman 15 anyone? Wisconsin has a 63.5% overweight/obese population. Hows that for unsightly/unhealthy?

Oh, and there are two other cartoons down there. One about Oklahoma and abortion, the other about Arizona and them crazy illegals... or legals, whichever the case may be.
